Sally Newton is drawn to the British natural world capturing the movement and qualities of the wildlife she is immersed within.
“I watch and wait allowing my drawings to evolve as my subjects move. I consider both the wildlife and my experience of watching them, as the observing artist.”

Artist

Sally Newton

Sally Newton is an artist based in Hampshire. Since graduating from the Cambridge School of Art in 2004 with a B.A.(Hons) in Fine Art (Printmaking), Sally has exhibited her work at solo and group exhibitions across the UK.

Drawn to her relationship with the natural world in the UK, Sally explores thematic work related to both the life and land of our island. Her recent works explore landscapes using colour, form and texture to capture a deep sense of connection with the environment. Studies always begin from life and through a series of drawings, studies and paintings using oil paints, crayons and pastels, her work hints at a shared intimacy and legacy with the land.

Her interest in life expands beyond wildlife to the rural livestock who help to form our landscape. In 2021, Sally completed a year long residency at Cholderton Estate and she continues to work there regularly where the opportunity to explore the local landscape and rural practices always brings new interest.

Her work studying wildlife led to the award of the John Busby Seabird Drawing Prize, which enabled her to study seabird colonies around the Firth of Forth in Summer 2022. This has led to further painting weeks at the Isle of May where she continues to make work inspired by the seabird colonies and isolated landscape.

Sally has also studied the Grey Seal colony in Norfolk and the reintroduced Great Bustard in Salisbury Plain.

Sally works from her studio at Project Workshops, a vibrant artist community. Private studio visits are available on request.
